April 10-16 is Food Waste Prevention Week. While we promote composting as an effective strategy for managing food scraps, just like with recycling, REDUCE and REUSE always comes first. The good news is that reducing food waste helps families save money, reduces the negative impact of food waste on the environment, and address hunger in our communities. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that more food waste reaches landfills than any other single material in our everyday trash. By cutting food waste at the source, you can easily have a positive impact on the environment and your wallet.
Visit the EPA’s Preventing Wasted Food at Home page to learn more about the impacts and scale of food waste as well as a number of interesting and informative resources on how to prevent food waste at home. The resources include food prep calculators, shopping guides, planning tools, storage tips, recipes and so much more!
